2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS: Sexy Four-Door Luxury Car Full Of Future Tech

December 29, 2017

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS was first introduced for the 2005 model year. It started the modern “four-door coupe” design trend. By taking a sedan, lowering the roof, and giving it a sporty slope towards the rear, Mercedes-Benz had created an entirely new body style.

Combining the interior space of a four-door sedan with the sexy styling of a two-door coupe, these four-door coupes have caught on with other automakers. BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, and even Kia (with its new Stinger), have hopped onto the four-door coupe bandwagon. Some have even added a hatch in the rear for added utility.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS is all new, so it will be the first year of the third generation model. It incorporates a variety of cutting-edge technologies as both standard and optional equipment. It is also a five-seater for the first time, designed for three passengers in the rear instead of just two.

The 2019 CLS will go on sale in the United States by the fall of 2018.

2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS Trim Levels

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS will be available in a single configuration with two drive system variations. These are the CLS450 (with rear-wheel drive) and the CLS450 4MATIC (with all-wheel drive).

A special upscale “Edition 1” package will be available at launch. This will include the following special features:

  • 19” AMG alloy wheels in black finish
  • LED Intelligent Light headlamps
  • Copper Art interior design in black Nappa leather with copper accents and stitching
  • Unique diamond grille
  • Dashboard support lined in black nappa leather
  • Center console and dashboard support trim in Natural grain black ash wood with matching center console
  • IWC analogue clock with exclusive dial face
  • Vehicle key in high-gloss black with high-sheen chrome surround
  • Floor mats with “Edition 1” badge and copper-colored piping
  • Chrome “Edition 1” lettering on the center console
  • “Edition 1” display on the welcome screen

First Mercedes-Benz With 48-Volt Hybrid System

The standard and only engine for the CLS450 is a new 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine rated at 362 horsepower. It is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The gasoline-powered combustion engine is combined with an integrated 21-horsepower “EQ Boost” starter/generator. As part of the car’s new 48-volt electrical system, the EQ Boost is used to assist the combustion engine when accelerating. It can also power the CLS by itself during cruising, and recaptures energy to recharge its battery. The EQ Boost adds 184 lb.-ft. of torque to the 369 lb.-ft. of the combustion engine. This provides the CLS with some very impressive acceleration. The end result is performance on a par with the previous model’s V8 engine, but with greatly reduced fuel consumption.

These 48-volt “mild hybrid” systems will become more common in the coming years. They deliver significant fuel economy gains at a lower cost than current high-voltage hybrid vehicles. As with many automotive innovations, they appear first on high-end models, then migrate down to the more affordable price classes as volume increases and the costs come down even further.

More Technology Features On The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS features state-of-the-art driver assistance systems that enable semi-autonomous driving in certain circumstances. These integrated systems include active cruise control, active steering assist, active lane change assist, active emergency stop assist, active speed limit assist, active brake assist, evasive steering assist, active blind spot assist, active lane keeping assist, and car-to-X communication. Wow!

Inside, the CLS450 comes with a 12.3” high-resolution central display. It is available with two 12.3” displays that merge to form a wide-screen cockpit beneath a continuous glass cover. In the fully digital cockpit, the driver can configure the information content in three different styles. These are Classic, Sport or Progressive. The ambient lighting of the 2019 CLS is individually adjustable in 64 colors.

The Energizing Comfort system in the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS links various comfort systems in the vehicle. It uses the climate control system (including a fragrance generator), the seats (heater, ventilation, massage), the surface and steering wheel heating, as well as lighting and music. It is designed to enhance the well-being and performance levels of the occupants.

Other available features include air suspension, heads-up display, and a Burmester 3D surround sound audio system.

Should You Lease A 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS?

It’s the way to go! The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS is a beautiful and luxurious showcase for the automaker’s latest technology. As with most high-end luxury vehicles, it will depreciate rapidly, so leasing definitely makes more sense than purchasing. Another benefit of leasing the CLS is that you will have full warranty coverage during your lease term. This will protect you from any financial obligations that may arise if any of those many bleeding-edge technologies happen to malfunction.
